Exploring New Zealand with Confidence: The Perfect Holiday for People Living with MS

Travelling is one of life’s greatest joys – experiencing new cultures, landscapes, and adventures can be deeply rewarding. But for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the idea of international travel can sometimes feel daunting. Concerns about fatigue, medication management, climate and physical comfort often weigh heavily when planning a holiday. That’s exactly where Ability Adventures steps in. Our mission is to make sure that New Zealand holidays are not only possible for travellers with MS, but relaxing, comfortable and inspiring.

New Zealand is one of the most accessible, welcoming, and scenic destinations in the world.  With its cooler climate, relaxed pace, and stunning natural beauty, it’s the perfect place to travel if you want to explore without overexertion. At Ability Adventures, we design itineraries with specific attention to the unique needs of people living with MS, ensuring every trip is both enjoyable and worry-free.

Here's how we create holidays that remove stress, provide peace of mind, and embrace the joy of travel – so you can experience the very best New Zealand has to offer.

Keeping medications safe & cool

We understand that medications are often a vital part of managing MS while travelling. One of the biggest concerns is how to safely transport and store mediation while on the move. We provide you with a coolie bag to keep your medications cool during your holiday.  We also ensure that your accommodation has a fridge in your room.

Stress-free border crossings

International airports can be overwhelming, especially when dealing with fatigue, long queues or mobility considerations.  If you require additional assistance on arrival, we ensure this is available for you on arrival. New Zealand customs officials have a reputation for being friendly and welcoming so that you will feel calm and cared for on arrival.

Gentle travel days

One of the keys to travelling well with MS is pacing. Overly long days can be exhausting, so we design our itineraries with shorter travel distances between destinations. That way, you’ll still experience the breadth and beauty of New Zealand – from mountains to coastlines to vibrant cities, but without long draining days.

We map out routes with regular stretch breaks, ensuring you have opportunities to walk around, rest or simply enjoy the scenery along the way. It’s about making the journey itself as enjoyable as the destination.

A climate that works with You

Heat can be a real challenge for those managing MS symptoms, sometimes intensifying fatigue. Fortunately, New Zealand’s climate is particularly well-suited for MS travellers. Unlike Euorpe, where summer can be overwhelmingly hot, New Zealand summers are generally milder and more comfortable.  You will also find that our accommodation is mostly well air conditioned.  Spring and early summer, in particular, offer cooler, refreshing weather that makes outdoor activities more manageable and enjoyable. And don’t discount our autumn months. The South Island of New Zealand is beautiful at this time of the year.

Energy-friendly itineraries

We know that MS often brings fluctuating energy levels throughout the day. That’s why our itineraries are carefully designed to front-load activities earlier in the day, leaving afternoons free for relaxation.

Built in flexibility

When traveling with MS, flexibility is essential. We understand that plans may need to adjust based on how you are feeling on a given day. That’s why we design trips with options and alternatives built in.  We want to ensure our schedule works for you, rather than the other way around.

Realistic daily targets

A holiday should leave you feeling refreshed, not drained. To ensure this, we set realistic daily targets. Instead of cramming in too many sights or activities, we choose meaningful and memorable experiences that won’t overwhelm or overextend.

Plenty of buffer time between stops

At Ability Adventures, we never rush. Wherever you are in New Zealand – whether visiting the Far North or the Southern Lakes – you’ll notice that our itineraries leave generous buffer time between activities and destinations.   That means no rushing from place to place and no stressful time pressures. You’ll have time to hydrate, stretch, or simply pause to admire the views.

Staying hydrated

Good hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining energy levels and supporting wellbeing.  We provide refillable water bottles for all our travellers.  In New Zealand you’ll find some of the purest drinking water in the world, so staying hydrated is both simple and delicious.

A journey worth taking

Living with Multiple Sclerosis shouldn’t mean missing out on the joy of seeing the world. With the right planning and care, travel is not only possible but deploy rewarding. At Ability Adventures we believe that everyone deserves the chance to explore New Zealand’s magic and majesty in a way that feels safe, supportive and empowering.

So, if you’ve been dreaming of a holiday but feeling uncertain about how to achieve this, let us reassure you.  New Zealand with Ability Adventures is the perfect place and the perfect partner to turn that dream into reality.

Let the cool climate, the gentle pace and the stunning landscapes be the backdrop to your next great adventure.
