Ability Adventures has always been about creating inclusive and memorable travel experiences — and its story has just entered an exciting new chapter.
When long-time Occupational Therapist and tour operator Marina Hanger decided it was time to pass the torch, she didn’t need to look far. She approached her cousin, fellow OT and tour enthusiast Sandie Grant — and the match couldn’t have been more perfect.
A Shared Vision, Years in the Making
Ability Adventures was founded on a simple but powerful idea: that everyone deserves the opportunity to explore New Zealand, regardless of age, mobility, or support needs. Marina launched the business in 2008, combining her professional background with a deep love for New Zealand’s landscapes and culture.
Over the years, she created personalised, accessible travel experiences for seniors, individuals with physical or learning disabilities, and anyone needing that extra bit of support to travel confidently.
Passing the Baton
When Marina began thinking about the future of the business, Sandie was the first person who came to mind. Despite being 14 years apart in age, the cousins share the same unique blend of skills: they’re both trained Occupational Therapists, experienced in tour planning, and passionate about helping people live fully.
Sandie had been curating tours for friends and family for years and had even joined Marina on several trips. At first, she wasn’t actively looking to take on a business — but the more she considered it, the more she realised it was an opportunity she didn’t want to miss.
The Ultimate OT Job
Sandie sees her new role as the ultimate OT job — combining problem-solving with positivity and purpose.
“Instead of solving problems in a clinical setting,” she says, “you’re applying your skills in stunning locations and helping people have life-changing experiences.”
From customising itineraries to sourcing equipment, managing dietary needs, and navigating accessibility challenges, Sandie is focused on removing barriers so travellers can focus on what really matters — enjoying the journey.
Same Values, New Energy
While the business now has new leadership, its mission remains the same: to make New Zealand road trips and adventures possible for everyone.
Clients range from individuals and couples to families and groups, many of whom are used to city living but want to experience New Zealand’s vast, open spaces. With Sandie at the helm, they continue to receive the same thoughtful planning, genuine care, and personalised support Ability Adventures is known for.
A Travel Company That Makes a Difference
“Planning a holiday can be stressful for anyone,” Sandie says. “When someone has an impairment or disability, there’s even more to think about. If we can take away the stress and make travel enjoyable again — that’s everything.”
With a fire in her eyes and the same passion that sparked Ability Adventures in the first place, Sandie is ready to carry the vision forward — enabling more people to experience the adventure of a lifetime.
